Being in Alpha Kappa Psi has all of the benefits of a social fraternity with the added benefit of professional development. From the start of your recruitment process and beyond our chapter seeks to build your resume, give you leadership experience, and expand both your network and your knowledge base. We save plenty of time for fun and camaraderie, but it's the professional atmosphere of a business fraternity that sets you apart from your peers. You'll improve your public speaking skills, get experience coordinating events, and join an invaluable brotherhood of friends, leaders and professionals.
AKΨ isn't just something to simply put on your résumé during college. What we offer is an experience that you will not find elsewhere. AKPsi offers a brotherhood that lasts a lifetime, memories to cherish, an edge above your peers, and networking that is unsurpassed. Alpha Kappa Psi is a fraternity for life.
[Top of page]Alpha Kappa Psi was founded as an all male fraternity in 1904, with one of their objectives being to help set up business schools at colleges (there were only 3 or 4 business schools in 1904). The Federal Government was more than happy to assist financially with AKΨ's mission. In 1976, the Equal Rights in Education Act stated if you ever received federal funds, you could not discriminate on the basis of gender. Thus, Alpha Kappa Psi (and many other professional fraternities) were told either A) disband or B) allow the initiation of women. We picked B.
[Top of page]By bringing together people that share the same field and interests, and further developing their skills and talents in that field, they are able to capitalize on networking, professional development, and furthering every member's careers and opportunities in that given field. Any recruiter will tell you, it's not what you've learned in a classroom that is important; it is your ability to apply that knowledge. A professional fraternity gives you an opportunity to assume leadership positions and to organize and coordinate events to demonstrate your ability to do just that.
[Top of page]Any guy or girl who is interested in business or the professional world can join Alpha Kappa Psi. Alpha Kappa Psi at Boston University is not reserved solely for School of Management students because the NU chapter realizes not everyone you meet in the business world will have a business degree. We have a diverse range of students who each bring their own talents and experiences to the chapter. We welcome all students to join us for recruitment, even those in social fraternities. If you are in another professional business fraternity, however, you may not apply.
[Top of page]Although we are looking for students with a minimum GPA of 3.0, those with a 2.7 are still encouraged to apply as there could still be a chance for acceptance into the recruitment process. If you do not meet this prerequisite you can always boost your grades and apply during another semester.
[Top of page]You should try to attend one Information Session. This will be a good opportunity for you to hear what Alpha Kappa Psi is all about, and it will provide a chance for you to ask whatever questions you may have, and hear questions from other recruitees. After that, you should try to attend as many Social and Professional events as possible, so that you can get to meet the current Brothers, and they can get to meet you. To become a part of AKΨ, a vast majority of the Brotherhood must decide in favor of extending you a bid. If they don't know you, it is less likely they will decide to invite you to join our Brotherhood.
[Top of page]A 'Bid' is an invitation to join a Fraternity or Sorority.
[Top of page]A pledge is a person who has accepted their bid, and undergone a ritual conducted by the fraternity. It is quite literally a 'promise' made by the individual to strive to become a full member of the Brotherhood.
[Top of page]The actual length varies with every semester, but mandatory requirements include attendance at weekly meetings and additional events. While the pledging process is at times very rigorous, it is also undoubtedly an invaluable learning and growing process that every potential brother must go through.
[Top of page]No. All recriutment and brother activities are designed to build teamwork, trust, professional development, brotherhood, and most importantly, to make sure you have and know what is necessary to be a good brother.
[Top of page]Any further questions can be sent to us through THIS FORM. You can also simply talk to any brothers you see around campus, or even better come out to ask us in person!
